Doing these videos just for fun. If I waited for a perfect take, I’d have nothing to upload... And, yes, I know singing isn’t my thing.
Hands of the Priestess Part 1 (Steve Hackett cover)
Beautiful tune from his Voyage of the Acolyte album. Lesson found here from @paulogtr1 . Thank you, Paulo! ruclips.net/video/U9CZGvDUEk8/видео.htmlsi=xeTijzdemx_pyQZc

Here Comes the Flood (Peter Gabriel cover)

PG has so many great tunes & this is one of my favorites of his. From his first solo album in 1977, “Peter Gabriel” (sometimes referred to as “Car”). This is also a wonderful exercise in inversions (“slash chords”). Takamine C-132S; standard tuning; capo IV

From their Misplaced Childhood album. Such a fun song to play. Pardon the minor foibles & “guitar face.” Backing track courtesy of @themindbenders here: ruclips.net/video/ysvDbdz59mc/видео.htmlsi=zlupPEdrO6DostWn

Breathless solo (Robert Fripp cover)

From Robert Fripp’s Exposure album. This is a good workout: straight eighth notes at 135 bpm in 9/4 (4 5 feel). While I know full well which notes to play & when, I don’t always make it thru without a little mistake or two. This take isn’t too bad. I found tabs here: www.elephant-talk.com/wiki/Tabs_/_Transcriptions
South Side of the Sky - Yes Guitar Tutorial / Lesson
Просмотров 83310 месяцев назад
#yes #guitarlesson #stevehowe #progrock A viewer asked for a tutorial & here it is. I did have to (hastily) relearn the song, as I haven’t played it in quite a while. As well, this is not a note for note lesson, rather I am just showing you how I play it. However, I do think I captured the spirit of the song. For the second half of verse 3, I’m showing here what I should have played in my cover...

A buddy of mine gave me this cheap guitar. New tuning machines, nut extender & new strings later we have a lap steel. Tuned to Em (E-B-E-G-B-E). I’m not much of a slide player, but this is a cool tune to learn on!

Your Move / All Good People (Yes cover)
Thanks dude, perfect. And it's encouraging to hear it still sounds good on 6 strings instead of 12
Hi Connor. Glad you like it & think it sounds good. I tried to add octaves or doubles where I could to get a fuller sound, since I don’t have a 12-string.
Great job! Congratulations.
This song wasn’t even on my radar, but your lesson came in my subscription feed & I learned from you! Grazie mille, Paulo!
- you're on a hell of a quest! Looking forward to your progress with this titan of a tune (epic)!
Me, too 😂 It’s one that I may never completely get. Bits & pieces here & there, sure. That intro is a very difficult part, even to fake. Here is a wee bit of the intro: ruclips.net/user/shorts-PZJiKI2yfA?feature=share Thx for listening & the comments.
Favoloso ❤️❤️👍👍👍🎸🎸🎸
Grazie, Sergio!
Fantastic 🎉🎉
Thanks, Pete!
Nice one!
Great shirt too
Thx, Lo!
Good job, man! 👍
Thanks, BigJak!
You must be in to sadistically torturing yourself through guitar practise 😂
Ha! It’s actually not too bad, but for me the trick is playing it cleanly, which right now is hit or miss (& forget about up to speed on the record). But it’s a good workout & a cool bit.
beautiful shirt
Thanks, Derek. Great album too 😉
Guitar lesson please
I happen to have that already. I hope it helps! ruclips.net/video/JriBslrGBTY/видео.html
Very good, congratulations!
Thank you!
Wow such a beautiful melody!
Thanks. It’s a very pretty tune.
Warren Zevon, every once in a while.. one needs to emmerce one's self
Love WZ!
@@polygraphovich He stands alone, even when someone else sings one of his songs, you still know it is him
exellent playing🙌 I'm a beguinner player and I uploaded the same piece a couple days ago can you check it?
Hi Tony. Thx for the kind words. I’m no classical guitarist by any stretch. I saw your version: well-done! You put a lot of feeling into it. Some constructive feedback: the bass note at about 1:00 & again 1:21 should be the open A string, not open low E. Then again, I’ve never been a note-for-note player myself.
Ohh you’re right, thanks for the observation
When I was learning the piece I’d often hit that open E there, too, so that’s how I noticed 😀
You are a Sir for sharing this.
Thank you so much!
This was one of the first Tarrega pieces I learned. Excellent job!
Thanks. I don’t know proper classical guitar technique, but it’s a lovely piece & I wanted to learn it.
@@polygraphovich If you’re looking to further your experience, I highly recommend the Christopher Parkening Guitar Method book series. It’s very concise and easy to go through individually, and there’s a bunch of traditional supplementary pieces.
Thx for the recommendation.
Same here! Fantastic work!
Thanks, Darrian!
Nice job! I've been working on this song too. The guitar part when the accordion comes in is really tough and I see you've found an easier way to play it . I'd love to know those notes. Any way you could explain those? ( The first 3 moves of the ladder down part)
Hi Gary, Thanks! Yeah that part you mentioned required the most work. I learned from here: ruclips.net/video/F_lhdHHB5Fk/видео.htmlsi=fz1sg5BeeZN1rNx_ The bass starts on a D note & moves down C# etc. Watch the lesson in the link above; he explains really well. Another thing that helped-also recommended in the lesson-is I use a sharpie style pick. Good luck & have fun with this great tune!
@@polygraphovich I've learned the song from that link but it appears your playing that part a little different ( Easier) Your not hammering the Estring like the video not that Im being picky. It seems you have it down and its easier. or I need new glasses. lol
@garysabo2181 Ah, I see what you mean. I kinda fake it by just arpeggiating the chords instead of where the lesson shows him picking thru & on the high E string playing open & hammer on to the F note (1st feet high E string). So I’m picking D-A-D-E-D-A, C#-A-D-E-D-A, C-etc & then I think I sync up with the lesson when the bass note hits B. I must’ve spaced, but my fake is easier & I think sounds fine. Hope that helps.
@@polygraphovich thank you
Sure thing. Have fun with it.
👍
Grazie! The entire intro is very difficult & I keep getting more & more bits but not sure I’ll ever get it all.
Well done, man
Thanks, Michael.
Nice but if u slide from the 1st fret (Eb) to the (E) 2nd fret (D string) from Eb to start, then slide back to the 1st fret (Eb) then open D, C, A ..that's the correct way
Thx for the comments. I’ll give it another listen; could’ve sworn there was a G in there somewhere, but I don’t have the best ear.
👍🎸
Grazie, Sergio!
Genesis, la mejor banda de rock progresivo, excelente canción, un poema
Thanks for the comment. Genesis is also one of my favorites. Hope this tutorial was useful.
Brilliant! Thanks
Thanks!
Awesome!!
Thanks, Jimi. I’ve been on a mini Rush kick lately.
😂😂
Bellissima esecuzione, Elp il mio gruppo preferito 👍👍🎸🎸
Grazie milli, Sergio. ELP, Yes, Genesis, KC, et al. sono i miei gruppi preferiti. Basically the classic prog bands. I was lucky to see ELP a few times.
Gran bel pezzo 👍👍🎸🎸
Grazie, Sergio. KC è una delle mie band preferite.
Gran pezzo 👍👍👍
I've always felt that Alex Lifeson is an underrated guitarist. He actually plays in more of a classical guitar style - but transformed to the progressive rock genre.
Hi Steve. That intro to La Villa Strangiato is a good example, too. As well, Alex’s use of open strings on barre chords was very transformative I’d say.
Buenísimo !!!!!
Thanks; I’m glad you liked it.
That was beautiful, rock on bro 🤘
Thanks!

bravo 💪, King Crimson T-shirt ? 😏😏
Thanks, Sergio! Glad you like it. Yep, wearing a Larks' Tongues t-shirt 😀 OMG, I just saw your Machine Messiah video: excellent!
Thanks man. You just taught me how to play this. Nice one.
Hi Ian. Glad you liked it & could pick it up for yourself. It’s one of my favorite TP tunes.
Love this song
Likewise. The whole Red album is so good!
Great job
Thanks, William. Appreciate the feedback.
This is sick
Thanks, Cally!
That was awesome! Thanks for uploading this.
Thanks! Glad you like it. It’s a fun tune & perhaps even underrated.
@polygraphovich it's a fun tune and a very hard tune to play especially that fast part. It's my favorite live song off of Yessongs
Yeah, that part is insane!
Yo brother... Wow man Very nice!! I know how long it must have taken. It sounded note for note to me. Great job! The song is sooo friggin beautiful! But that very, very end part man... Howe, and really every member of the band of course, while listening to this masterpiece...make you think (that's if u have the eyes, ears, heart and intellect to know how clearly, this was angeliclly inspired and delivered...and its obvious that you do! It makes you think "they cant be from this planet man!"..."Cant be!" The whole piece is brilliant but that last progression of Howes especially... The melodic, melancholy phrasing of it...its magical, majestic brilliance. It brings me close to tears whenever i hear it. So i wanna thank you and learn to play it too!! Yo brother... Hi Greg. Thanks so much for the thoughtful comments. This piece is, as you say, angelic & so very uplifting. The ending mini solo: wow! With the organ coming in just right. Glad you liked my interpretation of it. I hope you pick it up, too.
Está faltando algo. Mas, representou. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Obrigado. I rarely get note for note & am happy to hear I captured the spirit.
Whats the tuning please
Hi David. I have the tuning listed in the description. Copied here: Tuned: D A D A D F# with capo 2. Which yields E B E B E G# Hope this helps.
Tasteful.
Thank you!
The second chord is not C Sharp4 , but D11
I don’t have the best ear, but pretty sure it’s a C Lydian (sharp 4) in there. I do then hit a G note with my little finger quickly after the F# sounds out (which is the 11th of a D if that’s what you’re hearing). Either way you play the song, it’s all good; I’m not a stickler for “exact.”
Can you explain why? I'd think of it as C #11 because the harmonic movement seems to infer this, but I might be mistaken. Chords are funny things, and they can function as lots of different things
Hmmm. Thanks for commenting. Enharmonically, a sharp 4 is the same as a sharp 11. So your thinking works! I did theory but that was ages ago, so not entirely sure anymore the exact naming of the chord. I do know it’s not D11, as the prior commenter thought, since there is neither a D nor A note played. I hope I’m making sense here. Edit: since I don’t play the 3rd maybe one can call it C sus #4 if such a beast exists.
@@polygraphovich you're absolutely correct. It's not D11. The chord is indeed a C with a #11. I'd consider the C on the 5th string as the root, so the F# is an 11th away from that. I think you're playing C with the 4th string muted, then open G, C on the 2nd, and F# on the 1st. That's technically a C5 with a #11, but it doesn't really matter. The theory only exists to describe the music, not to rule it.
@rubievale C5 #11 it is then! Thanks.
Super 👍
Glad you liked it. Thanks!
@@polygraphovicha little bit les amused that the pre intro is not in videos on RUclips like it should be...but great playing bro😉
Loved it.
Thanks! It’s a fun one to play, too.
Trés sympa
Merci, Pierre.
